Studies

The core skills of the degree programme of Engineering Physics and Mathematics are based on sound mathematical natural science training and its application to the rapidly changing problems of industrial and economic life. The primary areas are material physics at the atomic level, nanophysics and technology, optimization and systems sciences, new energy technologies, biophysics and biomaterials, and numerical analysis and simulation.

The degree programme of Engineering Physics and Mathematics is jointly managed by three departments of the Faculty of Information and Natural Sciences:

Department of Applied Physics
Department of Mathematics and Systems Analysis
Department of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Science

The departmens of Mathematics and Systems Analysis and Applied Physics are also responsible for the basic mathematics, applied mathematics and physics instruction for the other degree programmes run by the Helsinki University of Technology, as well as for basic and post-graduate education in scientific calculation.

The training equips those students who have passed the rigorous screening process with powerful skills in mathematics and physics. They are taught to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in a comprehensive way to various fields of science and technology. Graduate engineers from the degree programme of Engineering Physics and Mathematics work in many fields of technology and can adjust to rapid changes in the working environment.

Almost a third of engineering graduates go on to take their doctorates. On average, about one in four of the qualified doctors at the Helsinki University of Technology has studied in the degree programme of Engineering Physics and Mathematics. The departments that manage the degree programme have also been responsible for generating several new branches of industry in this country.
